Applegreen

The rapidly growing, multi-award winning Irish and UK forecourt retailer Applegreen (the brand name of Petrogas Group Limited) chose Edinburgh as the destination of choice for its 2011 staff incentive. The group comprised a mixed male-female group ranging in age from 20s to 50s, who were very much up for some active, challenging and competitive team building activities. Applegreen chose Edinburgh because of its reputation as a great city break destination.

Applegreen’s Lisa Carlin initially contacted Maximillion with a brief for an “It’s A Knockout” style event. Through further consultation with Applegreen, Maximillion proposed its “Highland Fling” multi-activity format and in addition a “Taxi Treasure Hunt” around Edinburgh city centre.

Event detail

  • Date: Spring 2011
  • Venue: Kirknewton Stables and Edinburgh City Centre
  • Format: Group divided into smaller teams for both activities
  • Guests: 55

Outline

The Taxi event took in classic Edinburgh haunts such as The Castle, The Royal Mile, Holyrood Castle as well as some of the city’s ‘best-known secrets’ such as Ghillie Dhu and hidden closes. The Highland Fling event took place at Maximillion’s Kirknewton Stables venue and included whisky tasting, birds of prey handling, country pursuit and traditional, competitive Highland Games team activities – all in the glorious setting of Kirknewton Estate located just outside Edinburgh in West Lothian.

Outline

Both event options very much hit the mark with Applegreen in terms of what they wanted to achieve through the trip. Each event engaged the group in ways that played to the participants’ strengths and areas of interest; while the Highland Fling providing an authentic, experiential taste of Scotland in a fantastic country house setting, with The Taxi Treasure Hunt showing off the very best of Edinburgh in all its historical, cultural and contemporary dimensions.
