RBS Personal Leadership Programme

Maximillion was engaged by RBS Resourcing & Development to design & deliver a one day Team Challenge programme, which is one of the component parts of the wider RBS Personal Leadership Programme for Executives & Senior Managers. The day involved the Leaders engaging in a series of low risk, non threatening and competitive team based activities with young people from the Prince’s Trust, a community partner of the bank, in order for the Leaders to experience increased levels of self generated awareness of themselves and their understanding of others.

Event Detail

  • Date: 12 events over 10 months
  • Venue: Kirknewton Stables & Barony Castle
  • Style: Leadership Development facilitated through experiential activities
  • Format: Morning: Quick Fire multi-task Team Challenge, Afternoon: Rhythm Rocks – Rhythms of Collaboration!
  • Guests: 32 per event
  • Duration: Full day

Objectives

To engage the participants in fun, whole group and sub-team indoor / outdoor activities and experiences that would:

  • Provide opportunities for Leader and young person to work together to develop mutual understanding
  • Break the ice and build relationships
  • Raise levels of awareness of how Leaders’ actions and behaviours can impact on the group
  • Enable data to be gathered for the subsequent coaching session
  • Provide an opportunity to put “understanding others” into practice in a positive and motivating way
  • Pave the way for practising “in the moment” coaching

Outline

  • Team Challenge Brief to Leaders at RBS Gogarburn. Transport to Kirknewton Stables
  • Welcome & refreshments Meet young people, group energiser, ground rules, divide group into four teams
  • Activity 1 – Quick Fire
  • Lunch
  • Activity 2 – Rhythms of Collaboration
  • Debrief & Coaching for Strengths

The objective of Maelstrom Quick Fire was for participants to compete to achieve a team result, therefore it was essentially a competitive programme. It was run competitively across teams with light-hearted rewards provided for successful completion of activities or positive examples of individual performance or contribution. Due to the collaborative nature of Rhythm Rocks, this session was not run as a competition. However, prizes were awarded for outstanding successes or for those who tried hard but just couldn’t find the beat!

Outcome

The focus of the day was very much on creating a benefit for both Leader and young person. Through the activities and the built-in debrief and coaching process, the managers were provided with opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of these young people, many disadvantaged or with learning difficulties, as well as the opportunity to put something back into the Prince’s Trust e.g. raising funds for ongoing Prince’s Trust programmes.
