Maximillion at EIBTM

Director of Operations, Sarah Esslemont, reflects on her recent trip to EIBTM in Barcelona and how her attendance has developed Maximillion’s knowledge to benefit our customers. EIBTM is the leading global event for the meetings and events industry and delivers three days of focused access to a dynamic business environment, thought provoking professional education and business networks for all attendees

Sarah packs her bags and head off on a journey into the unknown world of EIBTM…well maybe not quite unknown but certainly new to me. During my short trip I met a number of different suppliers from hotels and destination managements companies to travel agents and convention bureaus from across Europe and North Africa. The idea behind the exhibition is to increase event industry experts’ knowledge on what different countries have to offer for incentive andconference groups, so when putting together our events we have the most up to date information on the services available.

I also had the opportunity to attend a seminar on IT driven innovation trends led by Hans van Grieken from Cap Gemini. This was very interesting and useful to see how other industries were embracing technology to meet their customer needs, for example:

• Airlines offering passengers the option of downloading their boarding pass to their phones
• Working with a “Cloud” approach to appointing staff and suppliers for different jobs
• The creation of virtual shops in subway stations where you shop by filling your virtual basket with product bar codes on your phone

Whatever will be next?!

I also visited the Sustainablearea where the Top Ten Sustainable Tips for your Event were displayed. They were also promoting Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) which is a year-end report similar to a financial report based on the social side of the business. This is due to be officially launched in February 2012, so watch this space for more information!
