Rewarding Barbados

October 26, 2010 : General Team Building

I recently had the pleasure and privilege to be invited by the Barbadian Tourism Authority to sample the delights of its beautiful Caribbean island.  Along with ten other industry professionals, we spent a number of days travelling around Barbados visiting a wide range of hotels, restaurants and attractions.  Barbados is a small island in the South East corner of the Caribbean around 400 miles North of South America and with a population of 270,000. Barbados is most famous for its rum and from the moment we landed we were immersed in this fun-loving culture with rum punches never far away!  Each day was hosted and sponsored by a local Destination Management Company (DMC) and packed with a good balance of site inspections and activities.  These included an underwater excursion in a submarine, a cliff top Segway tour, an open top Land Rover safari, golf at Westmoreland’s Golf Course and a Sunset Catamaran Cruise complete with a swim with turtles!

We stayed for two nights at the Accra Beach Hotel & Spa and two nights at the Hilton but spent time visiting the world famous Crane where we swam from the beach regarded as one of the top ten in the world.  The newly refurbished Fairmont Royal Pavilion boasted rooms so close to the sea it was a mere hop, skip and a jump into the tantalising turquoise ocean from your private veranda, and then of course dinner at Sandy Lane.  Exclusive, self important and eye-wateringly expensive, Sandy Lane was one of those rare treats to delight in as you know it’s unlikely to solicit a return visit from your own pocket!

The rich and famous have taken to Barbados, with the likes of Sir Cliff Richard, Tony Blair and Simon Cowell rubbing property shoulders with a growing number of footballers.  Our flight out said it all with 90% of the aircraft’s floor space dedicated to first, club and business class!  It’s easy to understand the allure of this island. The locals are charming, the history and culture rich, and the entire island ringed by extraordinarily beautiful beaches to relax and swim from.

Would I recommend Barbados for a long haul incentive? Absolutely!
