And the Winner is…

Rewarding Success
In August, I posted the news item “Are Awards Rewarding?” which reflected on our nominations for three key national awards:

  • Scottish Events Awards
  • Scottish Thistle Awards
  • VIBES Awards

Results are just in….

Friday 24th October, sitting in the audience at the Thistle Awards ceremony at the EICC, waiting for our category to be announced. A dreadful nail-biting experience made all the worse by our past lack of success – finalist three times over the last five years and never to have won.  Could this be the year, I wondered?   A seemingly endless stream of happy winners mounted the stage for a plethora of different categories and then it was our turn.

And the winner of the Sustainable Tourism Award goes to…..”MAXIMILLION”!

Two emotions swept over me, surprise and relief. Surprise because I was sure Wilderness Scotland, our fellow finalists, would win.  As popular and authentic advocates for sustainability, I really thought they would catch the judges’ eye.  And relief – thank God – we finally got our Thistle, fourth time lucky as they say.

So what does it all mean? This is our fourth major award in 12 months which recognises our ability to run a green business and deliver a sustainable corporate events service, and follows:

  • National Business Awards: Winner for Environmental Awareness (Nov ’08)
  • European Business Awards: Winner of Ruban D’Honneur, Environmental Awareness (March ’09)
  • Scottish Event Awards: Winner Green Award (Sep ’09)

Together, they all provide the scrutiny that the customer and our stakeholders require to confirm Maximillion’s position as an authentically sustainable business which is not chasing cost saving measures in the name of the environment, but prioritises the green agenda as a core value.

The Thistle Awards judges provided an apt summary statement:

“Maximillion has a fundamental commitment to social and environmental responsibility and the company’s business model engages customers, staff, community and the industry to develop a sustainable tourism vision.”

Thank you to my highly motivated and committed team for making this award possible.

And thank you to C-J and Nicky, past Green Queens who flew the nest for pastures new. Both were key to our green success as two tree-hugging advocates that put the green building blocks in place and helped develop and establish our sustainable culture.

The Vibes results will be announced at the Scottish Parliament in November, so keep your fingers crossed for us and watch this space….
